Hey Folks--
Just want everyone to stay abreast of what's going on with the VPO.
In my first quarter of work as the VPO, (Nov - Jan) I was focused on starting/restarting committees and efforts under the VPO office. Our committee chairs were appointed in the November and December board meetings. The committee chairs are:
Adam Steckel, Expansion Committee
Josh Dudeck, Rush Committee
Alex Chapeaux, PR Committee
All of the committee chairs can be reached by dlp email, using the firstname.lastname@dlp.org naming convention.
Also in the first quarter, the Expansion Committee and I were tasked with investigating the closure of the Madison, Wisconsin Colony. I have since released the report to the fraternity at large.
In the second quarter of the year (Feb - Apr), I was focused on growing the committees and getting them ready for convention.
The PR committee was joined by Br. Adam Williams, and the Expansion Committee now includes Br. David West and Br. Jon Borland.
The Expansion Committee held a town hall meeting on the topic of Colonists' membership status within the fraternity, and the prevailing opinion was that reworking the 06-13 convention resolution was not the answer, but there was still inequity in the process that should be addressed.
The Rush Committee has been working to update the Rush manual to give chapters another tool for recruiting new members.
The PR Committee has been active on a number of fronts, the most tangible of which is the selection of this year's theme - "There's no place like DLP"
Finally, All of our committees would like to hear from interested brothers! If you feel one of these committees are right for you, please contact me or a committee chair.
In the bond,
Rob Grau
Congratulations are in order for Brian Kluge (Delta), who was appointed to the newly created position of Director of Operations for the National Alumni Association at the last NAA Executive Board meeting! Brian will be joining our team in a position analogous to the NED for the NAA and we will start channelling the day-to-day operations of the organization through Brian.
The NAA Executive Board will be trying out the TalkShoe service at our next meeting. This means that brothers are welcome to dial into the call and listen in on the meeting, just like the National Board meetings. The executive board also voted at our meeting today to use the recording feature of TalkShoe to allow listening to the calls after the meeting has taken place.
Click here to access the call on the days that we have our meetings or to listen to previous calls.
This report covers the first half of the 2007-2008 fiscal year and the committees and activities of the Vice President - Alumni Relations (VPAR). The VPAR oversees the National Resources Committee, the National Alumni Steering Group and the National Alumni Association (NAA) serving ex officio as its President. The following sections describe the first half year for these groups and what remains for the rest of the year - basically until the National Convention.
National Resources Committee
Brian Guffey is the chair of the National Resources Committee. This year, the committee has put together a team that is approaching both internal and external resources. On the external resources side, the committee is working on networking with external groups. It has also started to work on creating a better career and networking experience for our alumni by establishing a LinkedIn network for Delta Lambda Phi.
NAA
The NAA continues to work with local alumni to strive for the creation of Local Alumni Associations (LAAs). Currently, we have around 3 interested groups of alumni in the Western Region, 2 in the Central Region, and 1 in the Eastern Region in addition to the LAAs that have already been established. While we hope to formalize these groups soon, getting the alumni to take the time to organize themselves continues to be challenging.
Income is down this year for the NAA, partly because we have not promoted the membership levels as heavily as in the past in anticipation of the new DLP-wide common donor recognition program. This program was devised by to provide central and consistent recognition program for donors whether they choose to give funds to the NAA, the National Fraternity directly or the Delphi Foundation. The goal of the program is to reduce competition for funds among the organizations and maximize donor giving be providing the most recognition possible. The program will be administered by the Delta Lambda Phi Controller and will be a points system, similar to airline miles. Look for more details coming up.
One idea currently being explored by the NAA executive board is to move more in a National direction - sending out letters, postcards, etc to all alumni or to the members to encourage giving and participation at National and Regional events rather than focus soley on the creation and administration of the LAAs. We will be exploring this idea in the second half of this year.
The NAA held its fifth annual winter fellowship event Feb 7-11 in Las Vegas, NV. There was a great time had by all in attendance - around 12 people total attended the event, which is about average for the retreat. While we would like to have more Active Brothers at this event, we realize that the typical timing of it makes that difficult. The group went site-seeing at Red Rock Canyon, Bowled at the Red Rock Casino, had a reception with the National Trustee and, of course, helped to keep the lights on on the Las Vegas strip.
Greetings from the Western Region! This past month has been a very busy time for the region. In the beginning of the month, we had our regional conference in beautiful Westwood, California. Our conference was a smashing success! The theme of our conference was focused on individual brother's strength and how to ensure each brother's needs are taken care of. The conference was such a success because of the hard work from the Rho chapter, U.C.L.A. colony members, the Western Regional Team, and of course, the entire region! We had close to 60 people show up, which is a testament of the dedication and willingness of the Western Region to further DLP's vision. I could think of no better job than the one I currently have! Special thanks to Dr. Kirstyn Chun, who came and spoke about depression and its effects on young men. We were also fortunate to have Officer Marino come and speak about the challenges of being a gay police officer. In a different turn of events, the West decided to adopt a new and innovative type of community service. Our new regional philanthropy is environmental issues, and our new slogan is "Go West, Go Green!". In the next few months, the West will work hard to make the region greener. In other news, I am proud to announce that the Western Region was 100% compliant in getting the entire end-of-the-year obligations in on time! Special shout-outs to our chapter presidents: Richard, Steven, Anthony, Chris, Jeff, Andy, and Martin, who worked tirelessly to ensure that the West was in the Green. I am also pleased to announce that the Western Regional Team has expanded to include Jeff Spafford of the Rho Chapter. Jeff will be bringing his two-term experience as Rho's president to further assist the region. Well, this is my first blog, but it will not be my last. I shall keep you all updated on the Western region!
ITB,
Robbie T.
